Understanding medicinal honey

"Medicinal honey" is the name commonly used for honey with naturally high antibacterial activity, usually measured and rated so you know exactly how potent it is. It's a different category to the honey you'd stir through your tea every morning: medicinal honey is chosen specifically for its strength, tested and rated using scientific measures like TA and MGO rather than sold on taste alone. Ours is produced from Western Australian native trees like jarrah, marri and karri, alongside Manuka from our own plantations in the South West, and every batch is independently lab-tested so the rating on the jar is one you can trust.

Understanding TA and MGO ratings

Two ways to understand the activity of our honey. Check the rating on each jar when comparing the range.

TA-rated native honey

TA, or Total Activity, measures the overall antibacterial strength of a honey, including its natural hydrogen peroxide activity. Our Jarrah, Marri and Karri Active Honeys range from TA20+ to TA35+, with Super Jarrah TA50+ and Ultra Jarrah TA70+ at the strong end of our native range.

MGO-rated Manuka

MGO measures methylglyoxal, the compound responsible for Manuka's distinctive antibacterial activity. Our Manuka range includes MGO829+, MGO1200+ and Advanced MGO1500+. Every jar states its rating so you can compare the range.

From our hives to your jar

We source our native honey from around 1,200 beehives across Western Australia's South West, working the Jarrah, Marri and Karri forests our family has known for over 40 years, since taking over Davies Apiaries in 2019. Since 2016, we've also been establishing our own Manuka plantations on regenerated farmland in the same region, with more than a million trees planted so far as part of a registered carbon sequestration project. Every batch is independently lab-tested at ChemCentre WA and Analytica in New Zealand to verify its TA or MGO rating, and we hold Certified Organic, B-Qual, Australian Manuka Honey Association and HACCP certification, so the potency and purity on the label is independently confirmed, not just claimed.

Beekeeping in the forests of Western Australia

Why Choose Honey For Life's Medicinal Honey

We're a family-owned Western Australian business, co-owned by Jesinta and Buddy Franklin, and every jar we sell reflects the same honey that's been part of our own family's routine for generations. Rather than sourcing from wherever is cheapest, we manage our own hives and Manuka plantations across the South West, which means we control quality from hive to jar. We're Certified Organic, B-Qual and HACCP certified, a member of the Australian Manuka Honey Association, and proudly Australian Made and Owned, and we support the Rottnest Island Queen Bee program to help protect Western Australia's disease-free bee population for the future.

Using medicinal honey

Enjoy high-TA or high-MGO honey straight off the spoon or stirred into warm water or tea as an everyday pantry staple. It is an addition to your routine rather than a treatment for a specific condition. Speak with a health professional about medical concerns.

Medicinal honey FAQs

Is there a difference between medicinal honey and regular honey?

Yes. Regular table honey is generally sold for its taste, while medicinal honey is tested and rated for its antibacterial strength, using measures like TA or MGO. Both come from the same hives, but medicinal honey carries a verified rating so you know exactly how potent it is.

Which honey is medicinal?

Any honey with a verified TA or MGO rating can be considered medicinal honey, though the strength varies significantly between products. Our native Western Australian honeys, including Jarrah, Marri, Karri and Ultra Jarrah, are TA rated, while our Manuka range is MGO rated. Generally, the higher the number, the greater the antibacterial activity.

Is medicinal honey edible?

Yes, all of our medicinal honey is completely edible and food-grade, tested to the same standards as any of our table honeys. It's simply rated for its antibacterial strength as well as its flavour, so you can eat it straight off the spoon, stir it into a drink, or use it in cooking just like any other honey.

What is medicinal honey good for?

Our customers enjoy medicinal honey as an everyday pantry staple, straight off the spoon or in warm drinks. It is not a substitute for medical treatment. For a specific health concern, speak with a health professional.
