Manuka strength explained in plain English
You will see MGO on every label. MGO stands for methylglyoxal, a compound associated with the non peroxide activity found in Manuka. Eucalypt honeys such as Jarrah express activity differently and are shown with total activity. Think of MGO and TA as two measuring systems for different honey varieties rather than a single ladder. Higher MGO numbers indicate higher measured activity. We test every batch at accredited laboratories and print the result on pack so you can check before you add to cart.
People often ask about Unique Manuka Factor. UMF is a grading system used mainly for New Zealand mānuka honey. We do not grade with UMF. We use MGO for Australian Manuka, which keeps selection simple when you compare our product range. If you want to compare across regions, remember that New Zealand mānuka is commonly Leptospermum scoparium and Australian Manuka here is Leptospermum nitens. Both are part of the manuka family, both are raw honey when bottled without heat, and both offer a strong flavour with a characteristic earthy note.
